3 Things Every Playroom Needs
Playrooms don’t have to be overflowing to be inspiring. A thoughtfully designed space with just a few purposeful items can invite deeper, more meaningful play. Whether you’re setting up a dedicated playroom or carving out a small corner of the living room, here are three things we believe every play space should include.
1. Open-Ended Toys
Think blocks, play silks, wooden animals, stacking cups, or anything without batteries that can be used in more than one way. Open-ended toys encourage imagination, problem-solving, and creativity. They grow with your child and offer new ways to play as their interests and skills develop. Fewer toys, but better ones, make all the difference.
A cardboard box can become a rocket ship, a shopfront, or a bed for teddies. With open-ended play, there’s no wrong way to play.
2. A Calming Corner
Even in play, children need time to reset. A cozy spot with a cushion, soft lighting, a basket of books, or some sensory tools like a rainmaker or a squishy ball offers a safe space to pause. Calming corners support emotional development and teach children how to self-regulate. They remind little ones that rest is part of learning too.
We love using soft natural fabrics, gentle textures, and muted colours to create a soothing vibe.
3. Connection to Nature
You don’t need to bring the whole garden indoors. Just a few nature-based elements can do wonders. A woven basket of seed pods or pinecones, wooden scoops, plants (real or pretend), or even nature-themed books can help ground play in the real world. It invites curiosity and gives children the language to explore what they see outside.
Nature invites calm, encourages observation, and helps children feel connected to something bigger.
A beautiful playroom doesn’t need to be picture-perfect. It just needs to be a space where your child feels safe to explore, express, and exhale. Focus on simplicity, sensory richness, and the freedom to imagine, and you’ll have everything you need.
