How Beaches are Made

Hello, Curious Explorers!

This week, we’re getting our hands sandy as we explore the science behind beaches. Have you ever wondered where all that soft, golden sand comes from? Is it the same on every beach? And why do some beaches have different colours of sand?

Let’s dig into the science and uncover the secrets of the shores right here in the Sutherland Shire!

Ready to Learn?

Every grain of sand tells a story. Over millions of years, rocks break down into tiny pieces through weathering and erosion. This process is powered by wind, waves, and water, which constantly shape our coastline.

Cronulla Beach and the surrounding areas are rich in sandstone, which is why our sand has a light golden colour. If you visit other beaches in Australia, you might find sand that is pure white (made from crushed coral) or even black (from volcanic rock)!

Want to see these differences for yourself? Try this fun STEM experiment below!

Sand Under a Microscope!

All you need is:

✅ A magnifying glass or microscope

✅ A few small sand samples from different beaches (Cronulla, Greenhills, Bundeena, or Boat Harbour)

✅ A white piece of paper

Follow these steps:

1️⃣ Place a small pinch of sand on the paper.

2️⃣ Use your magnifying glass to take a closer look—what colours and shapes do you see?

3️⃣ Try to guess where each sand sample came from! Does one look rougher? Does another sparkle with tiny quartz crystals?

Fun Fact: Sand grains are constantly moving with the waves! Scientists call this longshore drift, and it helps shape our beaches over time.

Local Adventure: Visit the Bundeena Sand Flats!

If you want to see nature’s sand-making process inaction, head to the Bundeena sand flats at low tide! These shallow waters reveal fascinating patterns in the sand, made by the movement of the water and tiny creatures burrowing underneath.

Make a day of it by walking along Jibbon Beach, where you’ll also find ancient Aboriginal rock engravings carved into sandstone. These tell the stories of the Dharawal people, who have lived in this area for thousands of years.

🌊 Best Time to Visit: Low tide for the sand flats - check tide charts before heading out!
