What’s All the Buzz About Bees?
Every year on May 20, people all over the world celebrate World Bee Day, a special day to recognise just how important bees are to our planet and to raise awareness about the threats they face.
Bees might be small, but they have a huge job. These amazing little pollinators help plants grow, breed, and produce food. In fact, about one-third of the food we eat relies on pollination, from apples and almonds to cucumbers and coffee! Without bees, our plates (and supermarket shelves) would look very different.
World Bee Day was created by the United Nations to shine a spotlight on bees and other pollinators. Their goal is to encourage everyone, from farmers to families, to protect bees by planting more flowers, avoiding harmful pesticides, and creating bee-friendly environments.
Sadly, bees are in trouble. Pesticides, pollution, habitat loss, and climate change are making it hard for bees to survive. But we can help! Even simple things like planting native flowers, reducing plastic use, or teaching children to love and care for nature can make a difference.
So this World Bee Day, take a moment to thank the bees, and maybe even plant a flower or two in their honour.
